Afsah Anwar
I am a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of New Mexico (UNM), Albuquerque, NM.Â
My primary research goal is to contribute to the understanding of malicious activity on the Internet and its impact on individuals and society. My research efforts have resulted in tools and frameworks that impact various stages of incident response life cycle. I am broadly interested in Malware Analysis, Threat Intelligence, Vulnerability Management, and building robust Machine Learning (ML)-based defenses. I lead the BeyondDefense Lab (NM Security Lab) at the UNM.

December 2024: Muhammad Danish has been recognized by Computing Research Association (CRA) among undergraduate students in North American colleges and universities for his outstanding potential in computing research. Congratulations Danish!
December 2024: Our paper at WISE 2024 got the best paper award!
October 2024: Paper on "Exposing the limitations of ML for Malware Detection Under Concept Drift" accepted at WISE 2024.
August 2024: Attended USENIX Security 2024 in Philadelphia.
April 2024: Hosted Dr. Sazzadur Rahaman at UNM. Dr. Rahaman delivered a keynote at the CS students' conference @ UNM.
February 2024: Dr. Bhupendra Acharya from CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security, gave a talk on "Cloak and Scam: Creating Honeypots to Measure Present Day Internet Defense Mechanisms Against Social Engineering Attacks" at UNM as part of NSF SFS security lecture series.
September 2023: Gave an invited talk on Improving the Security Response of Emerging Systems as part of Computer Science colloquium at University of Idaho and New Mexico Institute of Technology.
August 2023: Attended USENIX Security in Anaheim, CA.
May 2023: I am joining the Department of Computer Science at The University of New Mexico as an Assistant Professor, starting Fall 2023.
